Hi there, I normally post on the arthritis board, and due to toxicity of the Plaquenil after 2 years, I have had to discontinue it, since I failed the visual field testing. First of all, maybe, you should go and see some nutritionist to advise you what kind of food to take. You should eat more of cooking meals, fresh fruit and vegetables and less meat. Natural alternative could be ginger root, nicotine which I wouldn't recommend, papaya and some herbal teas for example.

I'm just wondering if any of you here have had to stop taking Plaquenil and if so what you replaced it with? Not knowing what your dx is, I don't know what to tell you. I haven't found a replacement except that I started my cytoxan every month now. Although I take Enbrel, and MTX, neither one work as well as the Plaquenil and the fatigue and joint pain have returned full force. I had to get off of plaquenil as well b/c of toxicity and benign tumors behind my eyes.

The natural remedies given here focus on lifestyle and dietary changes which can hopefully get your symptoms in check but they are not intended to totally replace medical advice. Diet. A healthy diet is a very important factor in controlling the symptoms of lupus as well as ensuring overall good health. I had an allergic reaction to plaquenil when I was first diagnosed with lupus. My rheumatologist put me on chloroquine and I have been on that for the last 5 years. My flare ups have been minimal on the chloroquine. I do have to go for eye checks just like plaquenil. But I’ve had good luck with this so far. Maybe it’s worth a try! Goodluck. Dr. Kim responded Nothing safer. Plaquenil is also known as hydroxychloroquine, so the parent drug Chloroquine can be substituted. But Chloroquine has significantly higher rate of retinal toxicity, so it isn't used much anymore.
