    Sep 02, 2009 I have been allergic to sulfa meds for over 30 years. I have been taking plaquenil for about 8 years with no problems. However, I was givin the generic Plaquenil at first, and I did have a reaction to that - until now I didn't reliese was the same as my sulfa reaction. Sulfa allergy is a term used to describe an adverse drug reaction to sulfonamides, a class of drugs that includes both antibiotics and non-antibiotics.   Such a response to sulfa is not all that uncommon. Whether caused by a true allergic reaction or other intolerance, sulfa reactions affect up to 6% of people women more than men.     If you have HIV/AIDS, you may have an increased sensitivity to sulfonamide medications. Having a reaction to sulfites in something you eat or drink doesn't mean you'll be allergic to sulfonamide medication.

    Mar 25, 2015 I believe that the difference between generic and brand name Plaquenil is possibly sulfa. I can take brand name Plaquenil the first few weeks cause stomach upset, but if I take the generic - I get a rash, sore throat and it's hard to swallow.
